The Evil Of A Right Thing Is A Good Thing
When I woke up this morning my mind started to reflect on a principal that I began to understand back in the day after I graduated from College. As a young man who passionately loved and followed Jesus, I started evaluating my life and I began asking myself questions like this:
What in the world could possibly cause someone like me to miss, forfeit, or not obtain the RIGHT THING that God has for my life? My conclusion… a GOOD THING.
Now obviously I would never intentionally choose something bad but, in all of my best efforts and carnal wisdom, I just might possibly chose something that was really good. You know, I could become impatient and settle for good. Or Maybe, I’d just choose good because I actually think it’s right. Wheeeeeeew.
Why does this even matter, who cares?
It’s probably safe to assume that most people probably want the best for their life and not just some short-sighted tunneled-vision momentary pleasure. Granted, choosing a good thing is not choosing a bad thing but the end result could be just as catastrophic. Just ask the man named Uzzah from the bible.. oh wait, you can’t because his good deed got him instantly killed, YIKES!!!
You can read the story of Uzzah’s that I’m referring to in 2 Samuel 6:1-7 & 1 Chronicles 13:9-12. The Ark of the Covenant (symbolic of God’s presence) was being transported on a new cart (ut-ohhhhhhh) and the oxen pulling the cart stumbled (ut-ohhhhhhhh) and so Uzzah decided to do a good and noble thing by reaching out to grab the Ark before it hit the ground. He touched it (ut-ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh) and God struck him down dead.. YIKES!!!! Harsh right? Well, there are several reasons why this happened - all of which boil down to doing what was right vs doing what seemed good.
God wants us to have the best
There is no doubt in my mind that God wants us to have the best and he ultimately knows what that best is. Remember, his best is not always what we would consider best. Let’s continue to seek his face for direction with every decision we make today. “Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
